1. Penn State 7-0
The Nittany Lions are fucking good. Like they’re reallllllly good. Saquan Barkley and Trace McSorley have PSU rolling. PSU rolled Michigan by four touchdowns on Saturday and Barkley is currently the odds on favorite to take home the Heisman this season with over 1,200 total yards and 12 total touchdowns. It’s not just the offense either, the Lion’s defense allows the least amount of points per game in the nation. We are going to learn a lot about them in the next two weeks as they go on the road to face off against Ohio State and Michigan State. If they can chalk up a pair of W’s they will assert themselves as my favorite for a National Championship contender.
2. TCU 7-0
The Horned Frogs are firing off to a hot 7-0 start and they’re led by someone who most people haven’t heard from since he replaced Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M. Kenny “Trill” Hill is completing 70% of his passes for over 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns this season and helped TCU take down the likes of West Virginia and Oklahoma State (which was on the road. These guys are #9 in points for and points against. They still have to go to OU and will face Iowa State in Ames next week.
3. Georgia 7-0
The Dawgs are back and find themselves undefeated heading into week 9. They knocked off the Fighting Irish on the road and rank #4 in the country in points against. Running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel are averaging 6.4 and 7.2 yards per carry to spearhead an offense which is 10th in the nation in rushing. With Auburn being Georgia’s only ranked opponent left the Dawgs have their eyes on a SEC Title meeting with the Crimson Tide.
4. Alabama 8-0
OK CHILL. Yes #4 seems embarrassingly low for the Tide but when I do these rankings I don’t take into account past seasons or traditional dominance. Bama hasn’t played anyone and they will see their first ranked opponent in LSU this weekend and they will be led by their Sophomore QB Jalen Hurts. Hurts has just under 2000 total yards and 15 touchdowns this season and has the Tide ranked 6th in the nation in scoring. On the other side of the ball, Bama has the second best scoring defense around as they have basically 10 guys who will be on an NFL 53 man roster at some point. The Tide are waltzing their way to another SEC West Title.
5. Wisconsin 7-0
Bucky is 7-0 for the first time since 2004 and they are doing it on the legs of a Freshman running back who not many people have heard of. Jonathan Taylor has rushed for 1112 yards and has 11 touchdowns. What’s most impressive is the fact he’s averaging 7.5 yards per carry. Per usual the Badger D ranks 6th in points against and there’s a chance that they won’t see a ranked opponent to the Big 10 Championship. Wisco controls their own destiny and the future is bright in Madison.
6. Ohio State 6-1
Offensive Juggernaught. That’s what comes to mind with this OSU football team. JT Barrett and JK Dobbins are thriving in this system. Barrett has over 1800 yds passing with 21 touchdowns and has only turned the ball over one time. Dobbins, a Freshman, has 775 yds rushing with 5 touchdowns and is averaging 7.8 yards per carry. This Saturday the Bucks welcome in Penn State for one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.
7. Clemson 6-1
Dabo’s crazy offense is simmering down this season but he still has the Tiger’s at 6-1. After last weekend’s embarrassing loss at Syracuse, Clemson dropped out of most people’s top four. Even with the loss, they have taken down the likes of Auburn, Louisville and Virginia Tech. The defense continues the trend of these top teams as they are currently 7th in the country in scoring. With NC State being their only ranked opponent left, the Tigers still have a shot at reaching the CFP.
8. Notre Dame 6-1
The Irish are officially back after taking down the USC Trojans last weekend. ND has had their second 6-1 start in the past three years but something seems different about this group. This team ranks 10th in points for and 12th in points against in the country. With that balance they have taken down the likes of Michigan State and now USC. Their only loss was a nail biter to Georgia in Week 2. Their offense is also 6th in the nation in rushing. The Irish will face three ranked opponents in their final five games, so we will learn a lot about these guys quickly.
9. Miami 6-0
THE U IS BACK BABY. Ehhhhhh not really. Mark Richt has the Canes at 6-0 but it’s a pretty weak 6-0. But how fucking cool is that turnover chain?!?!?!?! When your best win is over Georgia Tech it’s tough to put Miami any higher on this list. Statistically as a team they don’t crack the top 25 in any category and with games against Virginia Tech and ND on deck it’ll be pretty tough for the Hurricanes to sneak into the CFP talk. For now, snag as many recruits as you can while you’re still undefeated!!!
10. Oklahoma 6-1
I want to put OU higher on this list but when you drop a game in Norman to an unranked team it’s tough to put you any higher. If the Sooners were to run the table however they would have wins over Ohio State, Oklahoma State, TCU and West Virginia. I’d like to think those wins, paired with a Big 12 Title would be plenty to get them into the playoff. Baker Mayfield is balling out with 2,300 yds passing and has completed 74% of his passes with 19 scores and is going to be a Heisman finalist. Three of their final four games will be against currently ranked opponents and only one is on the road. All signs are pointing for a return to the CFP for the Sooners.
11. Michigan State 6-1
State took down Michigan and dropped a tough one to Notre Dame. They’ll have to go back to back weeks with Penn State and OSU in a few weeks. After that, we’ll know all we need to know agains Sparty.
12. Virginia Tech 6-1
With only Miami truly in the way of an ACC Title birth, the Hokies are riding high only losing to Clemson so far. November 4th in Miami can’t come soon enough.
13. Washington 6-1
I’m not very high on the Huskies. After falling to ASU, Washington will have to take down Washington State and Stanford if they even want a shot at the CFP. Even then, it will be a tough road.
14. NC State 6-1
After falling to South Carolina in week 1 the Wolfpack have won six straight and will square off with Notre Dame in South Bend this Saturday in their first ranked matchup of the year. The week after that? You get Clemson. Cup check!!!
15. Washington State 7-1
The Cougars are riding high right now atop the PAC 12 North. After a tough loss to Cal a few weeks ago, they bounced back and dominated Colorado on Saturday. With Stanford and Washington coming up yet it will be an interesting rest of the season.
16. Oklahoma State 6-1
A lot of people have OK State higher up than this but other than their loss to TCU they haven’t seen much. Well that’s about to change as they face three straight ranked opponents in the next three weeks with two of those matchups on the road. State finds themselves behind the eight ball but hot damn Mike Gundy’s mullet can handle that.
17. Auburn 6-2
Auburn is strange this season. They haven’ played a loaded schedule and their only loses have come to LSU and Clemson. They’ve been relying on their defense to keep them in games and they will have a final showdown as always in Tuscaloosa in the final week of the season with a stop at home against Georgia along the way.
18. USC 6-2
The Trojans are one of the biggest disappointments thus far this season. Sam Darnold has thrown a staggering ten interceptions so far and USC has dropped two of their past four games. They are still in the driver’s seat for the PAC 12 South but it seems as though the Trojan’s playoff hopes are over.
19. UCF 6-0
It’s hard to get behind teams like UCF. When you play in the American it’s always going to be tough to get any love from the committee. The Knights are doing all they can however as they still remain one of the few undefeated teams in the nation. Their season will culminate with a showdown with also undefeated USF.
20. West Virginia 5-2
When you lose a game in the Big 12 it used to always hurt more than other in other conferences. This year with the addition of the Big 12 Title game there is still a chance for a team like West Virginia to make some noise. To do so they’ll have to rely on QB Will Grier and WR David Sills to lead them past Oklahoma, OK State and Iowa State. Their offense is among the most explosive in the country and they will look to continue that trend.
21. Stanford 5-2
Everything looked like it was going to shit after the Cardinal dropped to 1-2 to start the season. That quickly changed as they then rattled off a nice little four game stretch to put them at 5-2 and tied atop the PAC 12 North. Statistically they’re nothing special but with a good coaching staff I wouldn’t be surprised to see Stanford shake things up in the next few weeks.
22. USF 7-0
Read same basic description as UCF except the Bulls run for 300 yards a game. Next.
23. Iowa State 5-2
This could be short lived for ISU. They make it here with the upset to OU but will face three ranked opponents in their next three games.
24. Memphis 6-1
Another team from the American, the Tigers actually have two wins against, at the time, ranked opponents with UCLA and Navy. They will face no more ranked opponents and will look to claim the American West en route to an American Conference Title matchup.
25. Michigan 5-2
The boys in blue were shitstomped on Saturday. Plain and simple. Jimmy boy needs to rally the troops if he wants to salvage what’s left of their season. They’ll have to travel to Madison to face Wisconsin in November then they’ll square off against OSU at home to round out the season.
